Why this plan must stop
Rochdale’s demolition and new-build plan is harmful for residents, the neighborhood, and the city.
Below are the main objections.
Unlivable new construction
Rochdale wants to build new housing blocks right next to the A10 highway.
Residents would then face daily exposure to:
- traffic noise,
- fine dust and poor air quality,
- windows that can no longer be opened.
Living directly alongside the highway is simply unhealthy.
Green space disappears
The plans mean that dozens of old trees and all inner gardens will be lost.
That’s a huge blow:
- the green buffer along the highway will disappear,
- inner gardens that provide fresh air, shade, and play space will vanish,
- it takes decades for newly planted greenery to regain the same value.
Affordable homes disappear
The current homes are relatively affordable.
The new homes will be much more expensive: rents often two to three times higher.
For many residents, this means being forced to leave the neighborhood.
Uncertainty for residents
There is no clarity about:
- how many and what types of homes will be built,
- the rental prices,
- whether current residents will have a guaranteed right to return.
Meanwhile, residents are being pressured to move – sometimes even with threats.
Loss of community
Many residents have lived here together for decades.
They form a strong neighborhood community with social bonds that are priceless.
Demolition will scatter people across the city, destroying this community.
Conclusion
This plan:
- makes housing unhealthy,
- destroys green space,
- makes homes unaffordable,
- and breaks apart the community.
That’s why we say: Stop this plan and choose real solutions.
